STATEN ISLAND, N.Y.— Charged in a series of domestic violence incidents, a 43-year-old defendant will serve time in prison.

Carlos Cruz, of Barker Street in West Brighton, pleaded guilty Thursday to second-degree attempted arson in connection with an April 26 incident that unfolded at a woman’s home on Staten Island, court records show.

In exchange for his plea, Cruz is scheduled to be sentenced July 2 by Judge Lisa Grey to five years in prison, followed by five years post-release supervision.

The defendant also faced charges in state Supreme Court, St. George, of second-degree reckless endangerment and first-degree criminal contempt.

His attorney, Michael Vitaliano, declined to comment.

‘2 separate fires’: D.A.

Prosecutors said it was around 7 a.m. when the defendant set two, “separate and distinct” fires at the residence, an FDNY investigation determined.

The woman’s smoke alarm went off, prompting a swift emergency response as firefighters knocked down flames on the building’s northwest corner and front window, prosecutors said.

Following his arrest, Cruz allegedly stated to police investigators: “I didn’t do anything ... I was coming back from work.”

At the time of the incident, he had an open case in Criminal Court involving a separate incident at the same address.

‘Breaking valid order of protection’

District Attorney Michael E. McMahon issued a press release following Cruz’s guilty plea, stating in part:

“Breaking a valid order of protection and attempting to set (the victim’s) home ablaze, Carlos Cruz posed a serious danger not only to our victim but to the surrounding community as well.”

McMahon went on to thank NYPD and FDNY investigators, Assistant District Attorney Amy Bedford and members of his office’s Domestic Violence Bureau.
