STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Adrienne Adams, the speaker of the New York City Council who represents the 28th District in Queens, is one of 11 candidates vying for the Democratic Party nominee in New York City’s upcoming mayoral primary.
Adams, the New York City Council’s first Black speaker, touts her efforts to protect childcare, libraries, parks and schools from budget cuts, deliver 120,000 new homes and start new programs to expand opportunities for all New Yorkers, according to her campaign website.
The candidate has discussed plans to “Trump-proof” New York City throughout her campaign, pledging to push back on much of the president’s agenda.
“Adrienne will always fight back when Trump tries to harm New Yorkers. She stopped him from setting up an ICE center at Rikers Island, suing and winning a restraining order to block Trump’s extreme agenda. And after the MAGA Supreme Court overturned the right to abortion, Adrienne quickly passed the NYC Abortion Rights Act to protect reproductive healthcare, and she created a national model to support women unable to afford abortion care by delivering the largest amount of municipal funding of any city in the nation,” according to her campaign website.
Adams has been endorsed by more than two dozen New York elected officials, including Attorney General Letitia James, New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso.
The Advance/SILive.com sent a candidate questionnaire covering various issues to all 11 candidates in the Democratic primary to learn their plans for Staten Island should they be elected in November.
The Adams campaign did not respond to the questionnaire by the time of publication.
