STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Ninety-nine Moore Catholic High School seniors made their long-awaited walk across the stage and received their diplomas to the cheers of family and friends in an air-conditioned Monsignor Bergin Gymnasium on the school’s Graniteville campus.
“It’s a goodbye to our teams, to its familiar faces and to the place that’s been home for years,” said salutatorian Justin Nelson in his address. “Instead of being sad that it’s over, let’s be grateful that it happened. Let’s hold on to the friendships we made and remember the teachers who changed our lives.”
Keynote speaker Monsignor Thomas Petrillo of the Class of 1975 cited his own journey as the seniors prepare to embark on their adult lives.
“My hope is not that you always get what you want,” said Monsignor Petrillo, adding that he hoped that graduates discover “the person God sees when he gazes upon you and what it is that God has in store for you.”
The ceremony awarded several faculty members on their tenure, including Jim Hughes in his 45th year at the school, who announced his retirement at the end of the school year.
