STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Staten Islanders are waking to cloudy, foggy weather and the possibility of thunderstorms during the morning rush hour.

The weather likely is contributing to delays on the Staten Island Expressway.

A traffic jam on the Staten Island Expressway, Brooklyn bound, extends back to at least the exchange for the West Shore Expressway around 7:30 a.m., according to 511 NY.

The fog is so heavy that the Goethals and Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge cannot be seen on surveillance images.

A person was transported to Northwell Staten Island University Hospital in Ocean Breeze, according to the FDNY spokesman.

A witness said there was an overturned vehicle at the location.

The crash on the access route to the Staten Island Expressway backed up traffic near schools that include PS 48 and PS 9 in Concord.

Day’s forecast

The forecast calls for cloudy skies, fog and muggy weather with the mercury possibly cresting at 79 degrees, according to AccuWeather.com.

Showers could lead to downpours and thunderstorms on Tuesday morning, causing water to pond in low-lying areas of streets and highways, according to AccuWeather.com.

Fog might linger through the lunch hour. The sun could make an appearance in the afternoon, but keep the umbrella handy since heavy rainfall is possible during the evening rush hour on our borough, according to AccuWeather.com.

The National Weather Service has issued a special weather statement that is in effect during the morning rush hour until 9 a.m.

“Areas of fog have developed across the region,” the statement said. “There is some patchy dense fog where visibilities have been reduced to near a half to quarter of a mile.

“Motorists should be aware of rapidly changing visibilities and proceed with extra caution. Use low beam headlights, reduce speeds, and leave extra distance between yourself and the vehicle in front of you.”
