To the Editor,
As a Bay Ridge resident, I’m deeply troubled by Representative Nicole Malliotakis’ support for Medicaid cuts, including Medicaid Expansion. While she’s carved out exceptions, they won’t help many who rely on this vital program.
My son is a full-time graduate student working hard for a better future. He’s covered under Medicaid Expansion. Like many, he can’t afford private insurance. The proposed cuts mean he and millions of others will lose the care they need to stay healthy and productive.
Why is a wealthy country like ours ready to deny healthcare to so many who pay taxes? Why should anyone have to choose between rent and medical care?
The answer seems to be that these cuts fund tax breaks for billionaires, adding trillions to the deficit. Slashing healthcare for working families to benefit the ultra-wealthy isn’t fiscal responsibility — it’s a betrayal of American priorities.
This isn’t just policy — it’s personal. Medicaid protects my son from financial ruin due to illness or accident. Isn’t that what a great nation should do?
I urge Rep. Malliotakis to reconsider her stance and vote against the reconciliation budget.
