STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The Staten Island FerryHawks are commemorating a hometown hero this Father’s Day with a one-of-a-kind tribute to borough baseball legend Bobby Thomson.
On Sunday, June 15, the first 500 fans to arrive at Staten Island University Hospital Community Park will receive a limited-edition Thomson bobblehead, presented by Thomson Law. The figurine celebrates the life and legacy of the Curtis High School alum who famously hit the “Shot Heard ’Round the World” — the walk-off home run on Oct. 3, 1951, that sent the New York Giants to the World Series, sealing their miraculous win over the Brooklyn Dodgers.
Rather than donning a Giants uniform, Thomson’s miniature is shown wearing his Curtis High School jersey while riding the Staten Island Ferry — a nod to his roots and the boat ride he took home following his historic blast. Rather than seeking out the spotlight following the win, Thomson humbly boarded a ferry back to Staten Island and reconnected with loved ones at a New Dorp tavern, cementing a moment that still resonates with Staten Islanders today.
The tribute is made possible thanks to Thomson Law, a Staten Island-based firm run by a member of the Thomson family, making the giveaway both a community celebration and a family homage.
First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m., with gates opening at 12:30. Fans are encouraged to arrive early for a chance to take home a piece of local history — and celebrate Father’s Day with a story that’s forever part of Staten Island’s baseball history.
