STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Staten Island University Hospital Community Park was buzzing on Thursday, May 29, 2025 with excitement as the Staten Island FerryHawks hosted 5,272 energetic students for the team’s annual Education in Baseball Day — one of the most anticipated events of the season.
The ballpark transformed into an open-air classroom filled with cheering, laughter, and unforgettable memories. Students from across the region packed the stands, bringing electric energy that turned a regular Thursday morning into a celebration of learning and fun. From the moment gates opened, the park was alive with music, dancing, and nonstop enthusiasm from thousands of young fans.

Education in Baseball Day is designed to combine the thrill of a professional baseball game with engaging educational experiences that take learning beyond the walls of a classroom. Organizations like Snug Harbor and NASA were on hand, delivering fascinating, hands-on demonstrations between innings. Whether it was space science or environmental awareness, students had the chance to explore new ideas while enjoying America’s pastime.
Although the FerryHawks came up short on the scoreboard against the visiting Lancaster Stormers, the day was a resounding win for the community. With every run, hit, and mascot dance, the students brought the noise — filling the ballpark with chants, waves, and pure joy.

The excitement doesn’t end there. The FerryHawks are off to a strong start in the 2025 season boasting four of the league’s top 10 hitters: Matt Scheffler, Damon Duez, Eddy Diaz, and Aaron Takacs.
On the mound, the pitching staff is dominating, leading the Atlantic League in strikeouts. Right-hander Morgan McSweeney has dazzled with a 3-0 record and a league-best 2.17 ERA, while lefty Christian Allegretti ranks in the top 10 with a 3.16 ERA.
The FerryHawks are just getting started. With three summer camp days on the horizon, there are even more chances for kids to experience the excitement of baseball and learning at the ballpark. Camp counselors and trip organizers are encouraged to reach out and book their group’s summer adventure by contacting grouptickets@ferryhawks.com or calling (929)-594-2957.
Education, baseball, and 5,000+ smiling faces — this is what summer in Staten Island is all about.
