Fire burns restaurant, martial arts studio in Castleton Corners on Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The FDNY fought a fire late Monday night at a commercial building in Castleton Corners.

The Island Coffee Shop and the Double Dragon Martial Arts Academy were among the businesses that sustained damage in the blaze at 407 Manor Road near Utter Avenue.

The fire was reported at 10:53 p.m. for the coffee shop in the one-story, 100-by-50-foot building, according to a spokesman for the FDNY/EMS.

A total of 12 units and about 60 fire and EMS personnel responded and brought the blaze under control in about a half hour, at 11:21 p.m., the FDNY spokesman said.

No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire remains under investigation, the FDNY spokesman said

Photos from the scene show a large number of firefighters both inside and outside the restaurant during the emergency response. Glass was shattered on large windows where potted plants remained on ledges inside the restaurant.

Some of the windows and doors were boarded on Tuesday morning at the restaurant and martial arts studio.

Metals, plaques and trophies were seen on display behind the glass of an intact window at the martial arts studio.
