Even Grammy Award winners aren’t immune to online bullying.
Singer Miley Cyrus revealed that body-shaming memes posted to social media earlier in her career made an impact, and even though she may wear sheer and revealing clothes on stage and during outings, she’s a bit more modest in her choices when it comes to swimwear.
Cyrus, 32, recently discussed the issue with Monica Lewinsky on the former White House intern’s “Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky” podcast.
“There was a couple [of memes] about my body in 2013, and people were putting my head on very unattractive things,” Cyrus said, referring to her now infamous MTV VMA performance in which she twerked on stage with singer Robin Thicke in a nude-colored bra and panty ensemble.
The former “Hannah Montana” star went on to say that she still feels self-conscious when it comes to beach outings and while other women around her will wear string bikinis, she’s more content in shorts and a tank top.
While Lewinsky said Cyrus is bringing the style back into fashion, the singer explained that her sister Brandi teased her a bit, joking:
“‘…you know this is what a grandma wears to the beach.’”
Cyrus said her sibling’s quip stung a bit and reminded her how she still feels “insecure” over the online postings from her past.
“I feel that,” Lewinsky, who’s endured nearly three decades of online scrutiny, assured Cyrus. “People, when they’re behind a screen, they tend to disconnect from the fact that what they’re saying or seeing is actually about another human being.”
