The Mets have quieted concerns over the depth of their bullpen with solid performances this year, but that doesn’t mean they won’t look to bolster it at the trade deadline.
There may be a left-hander available later this summer who is already familiar with this city, and Joel Sherman of the New York Post thinks the Mets should take a look.
“It is hard to ignore Aroldis Chapman if the Red Sox never get their act together," Sherman wrote. “Chapman had faced 24 lefty batters this year and struck out 13. And at 37, he was still averaging an MLB-best 100.1 mph with his sinker and 98.8 mph with his four-seamer. Chapman had a 34 percent strikeout rate overall, and his 8.7 walk rate would be the third-lowest of his career.”
Bob Nightengale of USA Today reported last week that Chapman will be a “hot commodity” if Boston falls out of the AL East race.
Chapman joined the Red Sox this offseason on a one-year, $10.75 million deal and is pitching to a 1.65 ERA with 11 saves over 27 1/3 innings pitched this year.
Chapman, 37, has played on three other teams since 2023, the Kansas City Royals, Texas Rangers and Pittsburgh Pirates.
In parts of seven seasons with the Yankees from 2016 to 2022, Chapman made 315 appearances, posting a 2.94 ERA with 453 strikeouts in 294 1/3 innings. He recorded 153-of-171 save opportunities during that span.
