Aiden Pedreros learned quickly that in the world of college football, things can change in a New York minute.
The Monsignor Farrell tight end was heavily recruited by Fordham University and after being offered by the Patriot League school, he informed the Rams’ coaching staff he was ready to commit.
Fordham, however, didn’t initially acknowledge the 6-foot-6, 240-pounder’s call and while he patiently waited to hear from the Bronx school, the University of Buffalo never stopped showing him love.
“Buffalo kept calling every single day,’' was the way he put it.
And, after conferring with former Farrell star running back Messiah Burch and ex-Moore Catholic star offensively lineman Henry Tabansi — both of which are red shirt freshmen with the Bulls — Pedreros suddenly had a change of heart.
“I did a lot of thinking,’' admitted the 17-year-old Pedreros. “Fordham was in my backyard, but I was made aware that Buffalo was graduating 2-3 tight ends this year; I know they have a good team an they’re coached by (former Farrell Advance All-Star center) Pete Lembo and I decided to go for an official visit.’'
Eureka!
Pedreros discovered he liked what Buffalo had to offer academically and athletically and he recently signed a National Letter of Intent to attend the Division 1 school on a full athletic scholarship, the Advance/SILive.com has learned.
The two-year varsity player liked everything about Buffalo, from the off-campus housing to the teachers and advisors he met and truly believes the Mid-American Conference school was the place for him.
“It’s a dream come true,’' he said. “Since 8th grade, playing college football has always been a dream of mine and ever since I received my first offer from Bowling Green a year ago, the offers have been rolling in and I’m glad to have found a place where I fit in.’'
Pedreros’ imposing dimensions made him a durable blocker who was credited with six pancake blocks for the Lions last season. In addition, he hauled in 13 passes for 181 yards and a pair of scores. Pedreros averaged 13.9 yards per catch.
During Farrell’s 14-7 CHSFL AAA quarterfinal loss to Chaminade, Pedreros not only caught three passes for 42 yards, but he scored the Lions’ lone touchdown on a 28-yard screen pass in which he caught a pass in the left flat and showed athleticism in streaking down the sideline to pay dirt.
The Tottenville resident is looking forward to playing for Lembo and the Bulls.
“They like my physicality and the upside I have with my size and they think it’s possible for me to get involved early because of their tight end situation,’' he said. “They like my height advantage against defensive backs who play in (our conference), as well as my blocking and pass protecting.
“(The coaches) said if I work hard, it’s possible to get on the field (right away) and I know that won’t be easy, but I am going to always work hard regardless if I get time right away or not.’'
Pedreros, who is planning to major in Business and Finance, received a plethora of offers from D1 schools. In addition to Fordham and Bowling Green, he also received offers from West Virginia, Wagner, Maine, Dartmouth, Temple, Yale, Bryant, Syracuse, UMass and Marshall.
