STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The FDNY battled a truck fire on the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge which temporarily closed the upper level of the span in both direction and caused extensive delays during the Friday morning rush hour.
“Following a prior closure, all lanes of the Verrazzano Bridge have reopened,” said an alert around 9:15 a.m. from Notify NYC. “Expect residual delays.”
No injuries were reported in the fire, which was reported at 8:05 a.m., according to a spokesperson for the FDNY/EMS.
Delays were reported on the Staten Island Expressway, Brooklyn bound, on the approach to the span.
An alert from the MTA indicated that the vehicle fire was in the Staten Island bound-lanes, but that the upper level was temporarily blocked in both directions for the emergency response.
Photos taken by a commuter on the bridge show officials blocking traffic as FDNY members tend to the damaged van.
