STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Jessica Ramos, a New York State Senator representing District 13 in Queens, is one of 11 candidates vying for the Democratic Party nominee in New York City’s upcoming mayoral primary.
Ramos, who assumed office in 2019 and currently chairs the Senate Committee on Labor, touts herself as a candidate who will bring the voice of working families, immigrants and everyday New Yorkers to City Hall, according to her campaign website.
The senator’s website highlights her past and ongoing efforts to raise the minimum wage, expand child care, secure historic housing protections, support union workers and defend first responders.
The daughter of undocumented immigrants, Ramos previously served as New York City’s Director of Latino Media under former Mayor Bill de Blasio.
“As the first American-born in her family, Jessica feels a deep sense of responsibility in bridging the gap between immigrant and non-immigrant communities. Jessica’s mother crossed the Mexican border by herself at 24, and her father was arrested in a workplace immigration raid in the 1980s and spent days held in a detention center,” according to her campaign website.
“As the city’s chief Latina spokesperson, Jessica helped keep our city’s millions Spanish-speaking residents, and the community and ethnic media at large, informed about government services and initiatives.”
Ramos recently endorsed one of her opponents, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, in the upcoming primary, but has not dropped out of the race and will remain on the ballot, according to a Gothamist report.
The Advance/SILive.com sent a candidate questionnaire covering various issues to all 11 candidates in the Democratic primary to learn their plans for Staten Island should they be elected in November.
The Ramos campaign did not respond to the questionnaire by the time of publication.
