STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The school auditorium at PS 53 came alive on May 27 and 28 with vibrance, rhythm and boundless enthusiasm as 48 fourth and fifth graders took to the stage to perform “The Jungle Book Kids.”

The much-anticipated event was not just a school play, but rather the grand finale of the school’s three-year journey with the Disney Musicals in Schools grant, and the culmination of the school’s evolution into a now self-sustaining theater program.
