There was no weaponizing of the justice system against Trump (letter to the editor)

Mr. Mezzacappa states in the beginning of his opinion piece that “Trump beat the case. ”Beat the case? Trump was convicted of 42 felony counts. How does that equate to “beating the case”?

Mr. Mezzacappa further states that the “Democrats weaponized the justice system to interfere with a presidential campaign.” What exactly does Mr. Mezzacappa mean by “weaponize”? There were facts, witnesses, a jury heard the evidence and made its decision. In fact, Trump will serve no time because the judge in the case took account of the fact that Trump was elected President and thus suspended his sentence. I would hardly call that that “weaponization of the system” when no one else facing the same charges would have been granted this degree of leniency.

Mr. Mezzacappa also states that “This was election interference. It was an abuse of power. The people behind it, including Alvin Bragg and Letitia James, should be held accountable.” Election interference ? Election interference is generally understood to be actual manipulation of ballots or misrepresentation of the results of an election, not bringing someone to trial when there are facts and witnesses supporting an indictment, as there was in this case. What exactly should Ms. James and Mr. Bragg be held accountable for? Actually doing their jobs when evidence was presented?

If the Democrats really wanted to damage Trump before the election, why didn’t they push harder to have him tried for his actions in inciting an insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021? The case that Jack Smith brought did not even accuse Trump of insurrection and never came to trial.

Mr. Mezzacappa believes that “This was not just an attack on Trump. It was an attack on every voter who supported him. It was a message to anyone who dares to challenge the political class.”

If Mr. Mezzacappa believes that the Democrats are sending a message to “anyone who dares to challenge the political class,” what does Mr. Mezzacappa think Mr. Trump is doing by threatening to support primary candidates opposing every Republican who dares to disagree with any aspect of his agenda ?

What does he think Trump is doing to Harvard and Columbia Universities in retribution for following their policies of free speech which he happens to disagree with? What does Mr. Mezzacappa believe Trump’s entire tariff policy is about? Trump has always stated that foreign countries have been taking advantage of the United States for years and that the tariffs he imposed in April of this year were to redress the imbalance. Never mind the economic fact that some countries produce certain products and other countries produce other products. They exchange products to meet each other’s unmet needs. This exchange of products is called “international trade” and doesn’t inherently mean that countries are taking advantage of each other the way Trump seems to see it.

Mr. Mezzacappa is seeking “…consequences. Resignations. Investigations. Prosecutions if necessary. If we do nothing, they will do it again. And next time they may get away with it.”

No president of the United States has been more vengeful than Donald Trump. Only Donald Trump has removed security staff from protecting outstanding civil servants like Dr. Anthony Fauci and retired General Miley or removed security clearances from Leticia James and Alvin Bragg, removed former presidents who are Democrats from the distribution list for the President’s Daily Intelligence Briefing and threatened Federal Judges with impeachment who do not support his cases seeking to deport immigrants. What does Mr. Mezzacappa think that Trump is doing by threatening major law firms with loss of access to federal buildings, federal employees, and loss of security clearances that in some way supported the Democratic party previous to Trump’s current term in office ?

Revenge is the principal of organized crime families like the Sopranos, where every slight or business disagreement is settled by revenge and violence instead of a system of laws. It is also the hallmark of dictators who must guard their regime against any opposition. Revenge is not a principle to be followed by Democracies.

Do you, as a voter, want the legacy of the Trump Administration to be remembered as one of lawlessness and retribution against anyone who opposes him, as a dictator would be remembered?

That seems to be the direction of this country since Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20, 2025. If not, then I would contact Ms. Nicole Malliotakis, our member of the House of Representatives, and demand that she join efforts to impeach Donald Trump.
