STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Aldi, the discount grocer well known for its competitive prices and private label goods, has announced it will slash prices on roughly 400 items — nearly 25% of its selection — in an effort to ease shopper concerns about the rising price of groceries.

“Our customers count on ALDI for the lowest prices of any national grocer, every day, and we never take that trust for granted,” said Jason Hart, CEO, Aldi, in a press release about the cuts. “While customers may see higher prices at other retailers, we’re working hard to unlock even more value for our shoppers, just in time for summer’s lineup of holidays and gatherings where food takes center stage. It’s another way we’re doubling down on our commitment to help shoppers fill their carts with great products for less.”

The change translates to some $100 million in savings for customers, Aldi has said, and will cover items like fresh meat, organic produce and pantry staples. Customers will see the cuts across all of the brand’s 2,500 stores, including both Staten Island locations, one of which is slated to open on June 26.

The price reduction comes as a recent study shows rising food costs remain a major concern among shoppers, our sister site, AL.com, has reported. As of April, the overall price of food at home was up 2% from the same point last year, according to the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers. The cost of food at home has increased by 28.3% since January 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic hit the U.S. in March 2020.
