Chemical Scare in Fairmount Park

On Thursday, August 23rd, I was driving through the park after picking up my kids from daycare and saw Action 3 News and police in the park. I called my mom and she switched to the news in time to hear that the bomb squad was called to Fairmount Park. Until this morning, I finally found out they were called after workers found a substance in a trash can and experienced watery, itchy eyes. The substance was detonated and was too small amount to be a threat. Here’s a link to the story

One of our Neighbors needs a Helping Hand

Rick and Sarah Shivley (406 Glen Avenue) were both injured in a car accident in Missouri on 7/14. Rick sustained a concussion and broken toes. Sarah has a shattered ankle. They will have surgery Tuesday 7/24 and if all goes well can travel back to Council Bluffs Thursday evening or Friday morning. Neither will be able to drive when they get back. Sarah was only released to eat solid food last Friday.

Many of you have been asking how you can help out the Shivley Household, so I created a CaringBridge SupportPlanner. It is a calendar that helps family and friends coordinate care and organize helpful tasks, such as bringing a meal, taking care of pets and other needs. We are utilizing it to provide meals to the Shively family as they recover from their injuries.
Please CLICK HERE to access the Caring Bridge Site. If you do not already have a CaringBridge account you will be asked to provide your email and create a password to create an account. This helps with organizing and contacting the volunteers. It only takes a minute.

Once your account is created you can then enter the “shivelymealsupportplanner” and click on the calendar link on the left hand side. I’ve set up tasks from 7/27 to 8/17 to provide a single meal to the Shively household. If you hover or click on any of the entries you will be asked to accept the task. If you accept you can fill out the details and save the task. This way they aren’t overloaded with meals at the beginning. Folks can see what days have already been fulfilled pick an open day and plan accordingly.

Alert: Home Security Scam

This alert was sent by the Gibraltar Neighborhood Association. We wanted to get the word out to the FPNA as well:
A person in our neighborhood (GNA) called to report an encounter with a young blonde-haired man named Sean. Seems Sean is interested in increasing his business profits, through contact with various neighborhood and homeowner association residents and neighborhoods with neighborhood watch, and marketing his home security services. He references “current issues in the neighborhood” to promote homeowner interest in security.According to ripoff.com  it is a pyramid scheme where they put a security sign in your yard, provide the security free, but require that you not tell neighbors its free and try to get them interested. The companies change..could be ADT or Pinacle. Cathy apparently encountered Sean as well but sent him on his way before she got the above information. Thanks to Kat Dunham and Jeff Ketcham for reaching out with information.

During the overnight hours of June 4-5, Harold and Fran Beck (198 Glen Avenue) discovered their 22-year old Buick, maroon in color and in pristine condition, was stolen from its usual parking place on Glen Ave. near High School.
A police report was made but the true value of this car, with its low mileage and sentimental attachment, will never be recovered.  There aren’t many Buicks of this age and condition on the road today, so if you see anything resembling it, please report it to the police.

Break-ins on Glen Avenue

Naomi Leinen, 449 Glen Avenue, has informed me that their car was broken into Saturday night/Sunday morning. Her sons back pack was stolen that had his school books and computer tablet. Additionally, John Drake, 451 Glen Avenue, had his home broken into during this same time frame. He does not believe anything was stolen. Both incidents have been reported to the Police. Please be alert and report any suspicious activity. Thank you for your time. – Kyle

Break-In at Gibraltar NA Home

Joe Atkinson reported a break in at his home Sunday. Please read his comments:

“I discovered tonight that our garage was broken into sometime in the past several days, and one of our bikes was stolen.  We weren’t aware of it until tonight because we’ve been unable to use the garage due to some pending work on the supporting retaining walls, so it could have occurred any time in the past week or so.  We suspect the break-in may have been related to some recent siding repairs we had done, as I saw one of the workers looking around the garage one day – nowhere near where any repairs were needed.  We found a cell phone charger that was apparently dropped in the process of crawling in or out of the garage window, so if the police pursue this, we may have something to go on.

Just wanted to let you know in case you see anything suspicious.”

Kirn Park Vandalism

It must be that time of year again.  Vandals struck Kirn Park Saturday night and pried the bronze plate from the memorial at the entrance to Kirn Park.  There was also a small bit of marker notes, like a school kid would write on the marble(?) itself.  Also, more bleachers have been broken. Officer Alba has been notified.  We will try to be up there more late in the day and maybe make a trip in the car after dark.  Also, if you live close to the park and see lights on, like from a car after dark, notify the police. – Gibraltar Neighborhood Association
